The story took place during the 40s and the 50s in Hong Kong. Wong Kin-sing loses his wife early in marriage, and lives with his mother and son Siu-wan. The mother of Sing harbours prejudices against Wong's second wife Chan Yeuk-mui and poisons the mind of Wan towards his stepmother. Sing's sister acerbates the situation, all those problems make Sing very miserable. To make things worse, Sing dies after a bout of illness and the whole family is disarrayed. Mui decides to leave the Wong family but secretly provides for her mother-in-law and stepson. It is only when Wan grows up that he learns of his stepmother's sacrifices and invites her to return to the family. |
