After their mother is killed in an air raid during World War II, Seita and his four-year-old sister Setsuko find a temporary home with relatives. Having quarreled with their aunt, they run away from home and take up residence in a cave. When everything is in short supply, their only entertainment is the light of the fireflies, until Setsuko gradually succumbed to hunger and suffered from malnutrition……
