After his aborted attempt to bring Frank Herbert’s science fiction epic Dune to the screen, Jodorowsky returned with this surrealist epic, every bit the worthy successor to his earlier films El Topo (1970) and The Holy Mountain (1973), which had made him a cult sensation. Brimming with Catholic iconography, pop culture references, grotesque humor and even an elephant funeral, Holy Blood follows the misadventures of Fenix (played by Jodorowsky’s son, Axel), who as a young boy witnesses his father cut off his mother’s arms, before committing suicide. A decade later, Fenix escapes from a mental asylum and reunites with his mother, the leader of a fanatical cult, only to be forced into “becoming her arms”and joining her on a violent odyssey of revenge.
