This 2013 Un Certain Regard winner at Cannes depicts the teenage years of director RithyPanh, when his family suffered under Pol Pot’s regime. Pictures of that time, however, are “missing”, as the only images that exist are Khmer Rouge propaganda. Panh uses clay figures as stand-ins for himself and other Cambodians who suffered at the hands of the Khmer Rouge in this harrowing memoir worthy of all its accolades. The Missing Picture was nominated for Oscar Best Foreign Language Film.
