Since its publication in 2006, word of mouth pushed the intensely moving accounts of a Kamikaze pilot’s final day, “The Eternal Zero” by Naoki Hyakuta into becoming a publishing phenomenon with over 4.5 million copies in print. When the book came to the attention of multi-award-winning director Takashi Yamazaki, the pathos of the central pilot’s sacrifice in the final days of World War II inspired him to create a movie adaptation. He selected extraordinarily talented and unique ensemble casts, among them Junichi Okada as the central pilot character, Kyuzo Miyabe, Haruma Miura as Kentaro, the grandson on the trail of his long-lost grandfather and Mao Inoue as Miyabe’s wife, Matsuno. Other members of the ensemble are Gaku Hamada, Hirofumi Arai, Shota Sometani, Takahiro Miura, Tatsuya Ueda, Kazue Fukiishi, Min Tanaka, Gaku Yamamoto, Jun Fubuki, Mikijiro Hira, Isao Hashizume and Isao Natsuyagi. The original author was also deeply impressed by the finished film, hailing it as a “fantastic masterpiece that even had me in tears”.
