Partly influenced by his wife, actress Kimi Hsia, director Tom Lin (The Garden of Evening Mists)[16th] tackles the complex love-and-hate relationship between mothers and daughters. Shot entirely in black-and-white, the film stars Hsia in a breakthrough performance as Yen, a woman recently released from prison after doing time for killing her abusive father. When Yen returns home, she discovers that her mother (the iconic Yang Kuei-mei) is dating yet another abusive man. Will Yen be able to take control of her fate, or is she doomed to be dragged down by family for the rest of her life?
